Here is a little fun with Webster today. We use these words but do we really know what they mean.

Betrayal – Betray – 1. To lead astray 2 To fail or desert, especially in time of need
Trust – assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something 2. Dependence on something future or contingent
Soul Mate = a person who is perfectly suited to another in temperament
We like to write villains who are sociopathic. Lets explore a little.
Sociopath. It is within the category of Antisocial personality disorder (aspd) It is described by the American Psychiatric association in the DSM-IV-TR as “a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others….”
Very nice article on the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath can be found here: http://voices.yahoo.com/sociopath-vs-psychopath-there-difference-1906224.html. Here is another good cite: http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html
Some of the key elements of a sociopath:
Superficial charm, manipulative and conning, pathological lying (They can even get caught up in a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing.),
Lack of remorse, the end justifies the means and let nothing stand in their way.
Ahhh Shallow emotions. When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Simply, they are not genuine and neither are their promises.
Incpapcity for love. Callousness and lack of empathy, a complete disregard for others feelings. “People with this disorder appear to be charming at times, and make relationships, but to them, these are relationships in name only. They are ended whenever necessary or when it suits them, and the relationships are without depth or meaning, including marriages.”
Irresponsibility and unreliability. Never a concern about wrecking others lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves. Puts it off in an excuse or lies to cover any responsibility. I love you but I was not IN love with you. for example.
Lack of realistic life plan/parasitic lifestyle. Tends to make all encompassing promises for the future but unfortunately exploits others quite effectively.
So use this to think about some of the words we use and spice it up a bit. Create that villian who readers can really hate!
